As the busiest travel season of the year begins to wind down, I’m sure we can all agree… it certainly was a hot one. Record breaking temperatures, high levels of humidity along with a record number of forest fires made headlines during the past couple of months throughout North America. People made the most of the weather and enjoyed days at the beach or lounging in the pool. The heat did not negatively impact the level of travel throughout the summer and kept air conditioners running constantly for days on end.

Many destinations that were visited required the need for a different or foreign currency. With so many denominations and types of currency available, people often have “leftover” currency upon their return to home or business. This foreign currency has no real use in our home communities. So how can we make a difference while making a positive impact with the leftover Foreign Currency?

Yes, it’s that time of year… the busiest season of the year for travel. With the children now out of school for summer vacation and many parents taking time off… travel will most likely be the plan for many people. As we plan our summer trips, I’m learning that making reservations in advance is a great idea. Many favourable places are getting booked for the summer months. Travels and vacation may include visiting family, friends, sightseeing and could include a trip to a foreign country. Perhaps visiting your heritage and immersing yourself in a familiar culture is the plan. Others may be looking for an adventure and planning to traveling somewhere new. Every 60 seconds the team at GCS hears the airplanes fly over our office, as the planes come and go from Lester B. Pearson Airport. This is tangible proof that we are still travelling on a regular basis.

CHANGE – What does this really mean?

We have been hearing so much about “change” throughout the past couple of months. During the election campaigns, everyone spoke of a better Canada, time for a change, etc. I heard many years ago that “everyone wants progress and growth, but very few want to experience change” In fact, we are often fearful of real change. At the same time, we complain about the political situation, finances, local leaders and now, regardless of the final outcome – many people will be unhappy with the results of the recent federal election. Take the United States for example, “everyone” wanted change, so the majority voted in President Trump. Yes, he is making drastic changes, but people are complaining about the changes. The way to make a real difference or make a significant change, is to do something different that will hopefully bring about something new, different results, perhaps something better for all. If we don’t implement or try something different or new… change will never take place.

Hopefully we can agree that reducing the need for Food Banks, minimizing impact of import/export tariffs, and a solution that would provide access to affordable housing would be a real change. I have an idea… what if we took all of the leftover Foreign Currency we have and donated it to a charitable organization?

Yes, taking our change (coins) and using them to support real change in our community and in fact the entire country. What if we stopped storing up our leftover foreign currency, bank notes and coins and instead we donated this currency to help support change.

I can hear the responses coming through already. How would this be possible? It will never make an impact, etc. What we do know is that Food Banks report that you can actually feed an adult or small family for around $75 per week. Some may argue, but the source of this statistic comes from the Food Bank networks… Let’s do the math… $100K in donations would feed over 133,000 for a week… to feed 133,000 for a year would cost approximately $5.2 Million. Considering that there is between $2-3 Billion available in leftover foreign currency, this is actually very realistic. With lots of potential funds still available to assist with the need for affordable housing and other needs in the community. We could assist seniors, disadvantaged youth, children living invulnerable situations, mental heath supports, summer camps for kids and the list goes on…

What we need to do is make a real change. Rather than storing up our leftover foreign currency, which is what the majority of us currently do. We also have no real plan to use these funds and we can’t exchange most of the coins and some denominations into Canadian currency. So, now is the time to take our “change” and make a real change in our country. We don’t need to ask the government for additional funding or their permission to donate our leftover foreign currency. So, let’s go ahead make a real difference by donating to our charity of choice TODAY!

The donation of leftover foreign currency does not come from our disposable income, so no direct impact on our day-to-day living. It’s time to donate those bags, boxes and containers of currency you were not able to return to the bank or currency exchange.

Taking the Positive to Help the Negative

As I began to compose this article so many ideas, thoughts and events filled my brain. With Spring now officially here, snow melting, temperatures warming and people feeling more optimistic… to the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, Global Money Week, Spring/March Break vacations, or for those who like to check items off their “To Do List”… spring cleaning. There is so much going on these days. With the political situation in North America taking over the headlines (i.e., elections, tariffs) we can get overwhelmed so easily. Then we turn the page or go to the next news update and see the negative impact of the rising cost of living and the crisis currently facing Food Banks across the country.

I’m hoping that we don’t get too distracted by the negativity of some of these events and situations. Wouldn’t it be great if we could take the positive and use it to help improve some of the negative situations? Well, there is a way we can do this together. People often refer to me as being very optimistic… and yes I’m an optimist. I live with hope that everyday will be a great one, that we can work together to help each other in times of need.

So how can we take the positive (vacations, spring time, etc.) and use these situations to help minimize the impact of the negative? Minimizing the impact from the food bank crisis, tariffs, lack of affordable housing, etc. I have an idea… what if we completed our spring cleaning, decluttering, reorganizing after Spring/March Break and took all of the leftover Foreign Currency we have and donated it to the Charity of Our Choice?

You may say… will this really make a difference? Great question… before the answer let’s ask another question: Could the organizations in our community, province or country use $2-3 Billion in donations? Thinking, we can all agree that if over $2 Billion would be donated this would make a tremendous impact to charities and non-profit organizations across Canada. The answer to both questions is resounding YES .

The donation of foreign currency does not come from our disposable income, so no direct impact on our day-to-day living. The source of donations of Foreign Currency would come from the leftover coins and bank notes we have accumulated at home or office, that have no real purpose or use at this time. Yes, I’m referring to the bags, boxes and containers of currency you were not able to return to the bank or currency exchange. This currency does have value, but no value for us at this time. I know that Starbucks or Tim's won’t accept it for our daily coffee or tea… I also know that the grocery store won’t accept it as payment for our food and I’m certain the utilities commission will not accept payment for hydro, gas or water bills.

BUT… I am 100% certain that if you donated your leftover Foreign Currency to your Charity of Choice, the currency would be repatriated and in turn the proceeds would be donated to help minimize the negative. Your donation would help the Food Banks purchase more food, help a homeless person with the cost of shelter, assist a youth who is feeling hopeless, help support a senior citizen who struggles with their mobility, etc. and the list of needs is extensive.

So… are you willing to help change the narrative while helping to minimize the impact of the negative and strive to make life more positive for our family, friends and neighbours?? Celebrating Love!

On Valentines Day we celebrate love. Sounds great, we see lots of hearts, flowers, cards being shared, lots of posts on social media and the list goes on. But what is love? Some say it’s an emotionally driven action. In the words of Thomas Aquinas… “To love is to will the good of the other” . The team at GCS shows love by assisting others to be able to do their essential work to help make our community, province and country a better place to live, survive and thrive to meet the needs of others.

Recently, GCS hosted a celebration to mark the 10th Anniversary of Global Coin Solutions . This event gave us a chance to meet with friends, family, clients, business partners and charity representatives. People who attended, brought greetings of congratulations, best wishes and the sharing of love. They were there to encourage GCS, helping us to do the will of the others (i.e., charity) we support. Demonstrating love!!

Last year, my article was about Love and Touchdowns, probably influenced by the craze of the Super Bowl. This past year, love was in the air again at the Super Bowl with many references to Taylor Swift and Mr. Kelce ��. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, the Eagles scored more touchdowns and won the Super Bowl. Fans would say, we LOVE our team, whether it be the Chiefs or the Eagles. Fans show their love by cheering on their favourite team and through the purchase of tickets, jerseys and many other team related merchandise.

End of Summer Travel

Celebrate the end of summer travel season through “easy” donations

Hoping you enjoyed a great summer. As we experience the last blast of warm temperatures, let us not forget (sadly) that colder weather is on the way. Associated with colder weather comes the increased costs of basic needs (i.e., food, shelter).

With a return to school for children, soon we’ll need to turn up the heat in our homes which increases costs for hydro and natural gas. With increasing utility costs and very high costs for food, the cost of living is currently extremely high. Food Banks are seeing record increases in the demand for food.

Families are having to decide between feeding their children, housing costs and the cost of basic needs. There is just not enough money to meet all of the essentials for many people, leaving some facing homeless situations. All of these issues often lead to weaker mental health as the stress is simply too much, causing depression, anxiety and hopelessness.

The issues seem to be impossible to solve at times. However, there is a way for each of us to help lower the negative impact and provide support for children, seniors and families.

Remember those awesome summer travels? Well, what is your plan for the leftover coins and bank notes – the leftover “holiday cash”? Rather than packing it away in drawers, bags, boxes, vases, etc., think about how you can put the leftover currency to great use. Help your neighbours, families and local community by donating your leftover currency. You may say, well I only have a few coins, or only a couple of bank notes (and one that is slightly torn). Please be reminded that every coin can make a significant donation. Yes, you can help change the world, one cent at a time. One coin could provide a meal through a local Food Bank.

We think that we need to solve the entire issue all at once. In reality, it takes a collaborative effort to begin tackling the issues. If we reflect on the food insecurity crisis in Canada, we need to understand that it will take many organizations (i.e., non-profits, charities, government) working together to positively change the situation.

You can make a difference! Your donation of a few coins, or bank notes can help provide a meal for a child, school supplies for youth, or support activities for senior citizens. It’s time for us to think BIG, with our small donation of leftover currency. If 4-5 people made “small” donations, this could provide food for a week for a family. Now that’s big!!

Often people think that Charities and non-profit organizations are always after the private sector to donate and support their mission. Yes, there is some truth to this as the charitable sector scrambles for support. Charities are challenged as government support decreases and the availability of financial donations from discretionary income become less and less frequent. Hope it’s not too late to extend this greeting, here it goes… HAPPY NEW YEAR! Wishing you, your family and friends the very best in 2024.

Are you recovering from the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season? Perhaps as winter is upon us, you are looking for indoor activities. These days many of us are completing some cleaning and purging to make room for gifts received and simply getting reorganized for the new year. As you rummage through the boxes, storage totes, bags, desk drawers, basement storage, etc. There is the real probability that you’ll find some left over Foreign Currency . Currency from past business, family or leisure trips. What are you going to do with those leftover bank notes and coins? Or the penny collection and even the bundle of Canadian Tire money? The busyness of the season is probably hitting a climax at this time. Shopping almost done, food purchased, a few days off and the schedule for the next 10 or so days is in place. As various traditions are being celebrated during this season, many people will be traveling to visit family and friends. Others may be traveling to simply enjoy a vacation and a time of relaxation. Perhaps a trip to a warmer climate in a foreign country. This is the season of celebration and reflection for many people and their families.

Along with traveling, other people may simply be staying home and after the gifts are distributed comes the chore or task of cleaning up. Many people see Boxing Day – after the heading out for the sales – as a time to perhaps do some reorganizing, decluttering and a time to make room for the gifts received. As part of the cleaning or purging process or in the aftermath of travelling, there inevitability will be some leftover foreign currency.

This is the perfect time of year to donate leftover foreign currency to your favourite charity. It’s very clear, Food Banks need assistance. You may say, only the poor need help… This is no longer the case as even double income earning families are requesting assistance from Food Banks as they can no longer afford basic food and shelter.

The lack of donations coupled with a dramatic increase in demand for support is causing great stress and concern for children, youth and families who are facing limited access to basic food and essential nourishment. As the weather gets colder and an increase in food prices continues, it is becoming more and more obvious that many people in our country do not have access to the basic food requirements they require to survive. In the coming weeks people will be faced with incredible and unfair choices… Do we pay the rent or buy food? Do we turn on the heat so we don’t freeze or buy food? Let alone any dream of a holiday celebration.

To help alleviate the crisis as we approach the traditional holiday season, there is one solution that every Food Bank should consider. Food Banks must begin promoting the donating of leftover Foreign Currency. Imagine how much bread, milk, fruit, vegetables and meat could be purchased with $1 Billion in Foreign Currency donations (this only represents 50% of the total Foreign Currency donations available in Canada). The leftover Foreign Currency is stored away in bags, tea cups, boxes, desk drawers, etc. and basically forgotten about… Did I mention it has little or no value in Canada at this time? It’s time to let people know they can put this leftover foreign currency to great use and help “Feed the Need” in our communities.

A Charity Perspective

A few years ago, a gentleman visited the national office of a non-profit/charitable organization. His visit was introducing the organization to an amazing opportunity for raising funds. This innovative opportunity has virtually no upfront costs and with minimal effort, donations could literally begin arriving daily. Sounds too good to be true? Well, unfortunately they thought so. Keeping in mind, the collection of Foreign Currency has been very successful throughout the U.K., Europe, and Australia for many years. Some charities fund their programs 100% through the collection of Foreign Currency. Seeing the amazing opportunity, I was subsequently able to arrange a meeting with Scott Hutchings and this has led to the development of some amazing fund-raising programs to help assist the charitable sector.

In a few years, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised in support of people with disabilities, children, youth and families, food banks and many other local and national charities. The program is simple and is based on the collection of leftover Foreign Currency. Foreign Currency you might ask, who has Foreign Currency? Well, the truth is, most people have forgotten about the leftover Foreign Currency they have tucked away in their homes, cottages, boats and offices. Yes, I’m referring to the coins and notes that you have in bags, boxes, tea cups, plastic containers, etc. These coins and notes, even Canadian Tire money can be used to help support millions of Canadians who require assistance from your favourite charity, or non-profit organization.

Did You Know?

In Canada, there is over $2 Billion in Foreign Currency that is serving no purpose other than being kept for? Not really sure… perhaps the grandkids will play with it on a rainy day, maybe you’re thinking one day I’ll go back to Portugal or another Foreign country you visited back in the day. With over $2 Billion in Foreign Currency available, imagine how your donations could assist the charity of your choice. Let’s break it down a bit further, there is approximately $850 Million in available Foreign Currency in Ontario. If you live in the eastern part of the GTA, there is estimated to be over $35 Million available for use in the charitable sector. In Durham Region that would equate to over 70 organizations each receiving $500,000. Keeping in mind, these donations are not Restricted Funds. In most cases they don’t require charitable tax receipts and donor stewardship is minimal. If that isn’t enough, through donations of Foreign Currency – donors would be keeping these coins and notes out of the landfills as the Currency are in fact repatriated and returned to their country of origin. This also helps to save countries around the world from having to produce additional coins and notes. The collection of Foreign Currency, truly is a win, win… win opportunity.

Imagine for a moment, how Canadian non-profit/charitable organizations could benefit from over $2 Billion in donations. Thinking longer term, this would ease the burden on the government who are often called upon to fund charitable organizations. In turn, over $2 Billion could be used to meet other essential needs in our country, provinces and your local community. Not sure how the various governments would deploy the extra $2 Billion, but that is a topic for another time.

How Does Your Charity Start To Benefit From Funds Available Through Foreign Currency Donations?

With minimal up-front costs and effort, your charity could begin benefitting from the collection of Foreign Currency… TODAY . The biggest hurdle facing the collection of Foreign Currency is that people are simply unaware that leftover Foreign Currency can be put to great use in their community. The first step in starting a Foreign Currency collection program is to share the message. This does not require a massive marketing plan, major allotment of staff resources, etc. You can simply begin with 2-3 methods of getting the word out to people.

First step: Compose a brief email that you can share with family, friends, co-workers, volunteers, donors, etc. (be sure to Bcc your contact list) and let them know that their leftover Foreign Currency has value that can be donated to support your favourite non-profit/charitable organization. They can simply mail in or drop-off their leftover coins, notes or Canadian Tire money. No special collectors or containers are required. In the past, we’ve received donations in plastic bags, small boxes, envelopes, old cookie tins, etc. Note: the Currency does not need to be sorted or organized.

Tip: You may want to specify what the funds will be used for, a specific charity, a special program or simply ask people to identify what charity they want to support.

Second Step: To help share the news to a wider audience, simply put out a few posts on your social media platforms. Keep the message simple #allCurrencyaccepted . A reminder every month would help keep this in the minds of your Followers.

Third Step: Be sure to share the information that Foreign Currency donations can have a significant impact on non- profits/charity in your day-to-day conversations. Great topic over drinks, at a networking event, social functions, etc. People find the concept intriguing and most people love to support needs of those in their local community.

How To Start A Foreign Currency Charity Program

Understand the Basics

Collecting leftover foreign currency is not a difficult thing to do. When you think of a toy drive, a food drive, collecting pennies or bottle returns, none of those collections are difficult. Sure, they require planning and awareness and there are some logistics involved, but everyone understands the basic concept.

Collecting leftover foreign currency is very similar: in each of the other drives, the donor is being asked to donate something, and that something is not something they are likely to have with them. No one is carrying around a new unwrapped toy or a bag of non-perishable food items … and certainly no one has all of their bottle returns with them. So asking for foreign currency is the same; you are asking people to get their leftover foreign currency from wherever they may have it and bring it to the location at the date and time specified.

Let’s Break It Down

Any sort of fundraising drive is composed of only a couple of things: who is collecting, why the collection is happening, what is being collected, where the collection(s) will happen, and when the drive will take place. Any sort of drive is only as successful as the planning behind it.

Who

Who is collecting tells a story all on its own. If the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation is asking for donations, most people will intuitively understand the donation will supporting children in Durham Region.

Why

When you hear about a toy or food drive, you have a pretty good idea why those items are being collected. A penny drive or bottle drive is about raising funds and that can be for anything and so can a foreign currency drive.

This is where your story comes in.

You need to clearly explain why you are collecting funds and what they are going to be used for … this is your opportunity to get the empathetic donor. The why is more important than the what and can even be more important than who the charity is.

If the why is valid, the donation will follow.

What

You need to articulate what you want. We have all heard the terms “new unwrapped toy” or “non-perishable food item” and when you hear about a toy or food drive happening, you know what they want even if they don’t say. When it comes to collecting leftover foreign currency, there is a little bit of a challenge since it is not a common method of fundraising (yet). We have recommended that all of our charity partners use “#AllCurrencyAccepted” in all of their social media posts to create awareness across programs which will help everyone. We also use the phrases “Any Currency, Any Amount” to make it very clear what is being asked for. The globes below were used for the Fired-Up Gala forSickKids on Friday February 24, 2023 at the Ritz-Carlton Toronto .

Where & When

If this is a one-time event, making sure everyone knows where and when donations will be accepted is extremely important. One-time events (drives) will need plenty of marketing (social media and other if funds allow) to reach your audience. You can’t start too far out or people will forget but you also can’t start too late or no one will know about the event.

If you are running an ongoing program, it is important to remind your donors about your program periodically. A gentle nudge here and there, an update on the success of the program, or asking donors to post pictures of themselves making a donation is a good way to engage your audience. An on-going program is also a great way to partner with businesses in the community and to support them by promoting their locations as places your donors can drop off their donations.

Event Based vs. On-going Program

As with most means of fundraising, some work great being a one-off while others make more sense as a long-term, ongoing program. Foreign currency fundraising is one of those that work well in either instance, it just depends on what is right for your organization.

Foreign currency donations can be added to any event-based fundraising. Simply add it as a method of donating and you are good to go! It can be added to a food or toy drive (they both usually accept cash donations anyway). Collecting leftover foreign currency during a bottle drive makes perfect sense since they are both recycling these items. And if you are considering a penny drive, adding foreign currency to the mix could drive up the overall value received by as much as 20X!

Foreign currency fundraising is perfect for a long-term, on-going program. It gives the organization time to explain the concept and if you are working with a 3rd party to host the collection containers, you can not only build a great relationship with that 3rd party, but you can also promote them as your charity partner and support them! Durham Children’s Aid Foundation has a great method of supporting their community partners … they’ve created a Google Map linking to every location. It not only shows the donor where they can drop off donations but creates awareness for those businesses!

Mail-in Option

Believe it or not, but people will mail their donations if you give them the opportunity. Durham Children’s Aid Foundation does this and they have donations mailed in from across Canada, from the United States, and they have even received a donation from as far away as Hong Kong!

UNICEF USA’s Change for Good program invites Americans to mail in donations of any currency. Big or small, your charity can take advantage of this too.

Airports Collecting Leftover Currency For Charity

Why would an airport collect cash for charity?

Let’s consider a few facts:

Currency travels the world much like people do … on planes
Foreign currency, upon returning home (wherever that might be) has no value
Foreign coins, low denomination notes, and in fact many entire currencies cannot be exchanged by your bank or currency exchanges once you get home
Many people try to spend their last little bits of foreign currency before returning home, in some cases buy things they don’t even need or want
Once you and your leftover foreign currency make it home, what do you do with it? Toss it in a drawer somewhere, maybe keep it in a jar … regardless, you likely never give it another thought
In some cases, leftover foreign currency simply gets tossed into the garbage because you either can’t be bothered to find a home for it or believe there is nothing you can do with it

Aren’t we moving to a cashless society?

While we are changing our payment habits and we are spending less cash (at home), it is a different story when we travel.

First off, in most countries, cash in circulation is at an all time high (and growing every day)!

Secondly, cash is still one of the most used methods of payment when travelling.

So why should an airport be interested in collecting leftover foreign currency?

To put it bluntly, it is too easy for them not to collect it to support charity.

They need a plan of course, but the execution can be anything from simply putting collectors in place throughout the airport to building a comprehensive plan that can include in-airport marketing (still images and/or videos), external marketing to let passengers know about the program before even getting to the airport, or even partnering with the supported charities to create more awareness.

What is the potential for fundraising?

A passive program, that is just having collectors throughout the airport will obviously collect the least amount. We are talking about fractions of a cent per passenger.

Our experience with such a program with a large quantity (17) of collectors yielded roughly $0.0025 per passenger … that is ¼ of 1 cent. 17 collectors provided fairly good coverage throughout the airport and most of them were highly visible in high traffic areas.

Heathrow Airport’s program has 30 collectors in place and has raised over £1.3 Million between 2013 and 2016! Granted, they are one of the largest airports in the world and their passenger traffic was over 75 Million passengers in 2016 so it makes sense they would do well. However, while they have raised significant amounts of money, they are still in the £0.0025 per passenger range.

It is our belief that an airport program should be able to collect no less than an average of $0.01 per passenger. Just think about that for a minute … 1 cent. Can you do anything with a penny? Not likely. But what if 20 Million people donated the equivalent of 1 cent each? That’s $200,000.00!

1 cent at a time by donating money that can’t be used locally.

What about an airport with 50 Million passengers a year? $500,000.00!

So, what would it take to collect $0.01 per passenger (or more)?

First off, a larger number of collectors would be needed and they would need to be in high traffic areas. Those locations need to be shown on airport maps and on interactive maps, there needs to be a category for them so passengers can easily find them. Still images and/or videos need to be shown on the many screens throughout the airport including the gigantic displays seen in many of the larger airports. A strong partnership with the charity or charities being supported by the airport would also increase donations. These partnerships will ensure that locals travelling through the airport know what they can do with their foreign currency when they return. Of course, it never hurts for an organization like an airport (or any large corporation) to be seen supporting charities.

What is the first step?

What is foreign currency fundraising?

Simply put, it is the collection of leftover foreign currency being donated to a charity.

Is it really that easy?

Yes and no. Asking people to donate their leftover foreign currency is pretty simplistic in itself. But it is a little more complicated than that. While most people have some foreign currency sitting at home collecting dust, they don’t give it any thought. And why would they? It came home from vacation and was tucked away somewhere, perhaps with the intention of taking it back on their next trip.

Why should you collect foreign currency for charity?

There is between $2-$3 Billion worth of leftover foreign currency just in Canada.

You can’t spend foreign currency anyway, so why not donate it instead?

Sure, you can take some foreign bank notes to your bank and exchange them. You can take more different currencies to a currency exchange … but neither of them exchange every currency nor do they accept many low denominations from many different countries.

You can’t exchange foreign coins … anywhere.

Foreign coins are not accepted at any bank nor are they accepted at any currency exchange. You can’t spend them and you can’t exchange them, and when you really think about it, you won’t likely remember to take them with you the next time you travel … so why not donate them and do something good instead?

Foreign currency is cash but it is not disposable income.

Asking people to donate foreign currency may sound like you are asking people to donate cash and you would be right. The difference lies in the fact that foreign currency can’t be used to buy groceries, pay the rent or mortgage, it can’t even be used to buy a coffee … in other words, it has no value here.

In 2012 the Royal Canadian Mint announced the withdrawal of the penny … and that created a frenzy for penny drives across Canada!

In 2012/13, charities across Canada went crazy for penny drives after the Royal Canadian Mint announced the withdrawal of the penny. Penny drives ranged from small local events to national programs with partners such as the Royal Bank of Canada.

One such drive collected $25,000.00 but took so much time and effort to manage that the charity considered it to be a failure.

Another drive, one partnered with RBC, started with a goal of collecting $700,000.00! To be frank, unless you have a major bank as a partner, such a goal would be debilitating … trying to handle 70 Million pennies would take machinery that most organizations just don’t have. In the end, that program ended up collecting $1.4 Million worth of pennies!

Collecting pennies vs. leftover foreign currency.

Did you know? There is roughly $3.84/kg of pennies … yet 1kg of foreign currency typically has a value 15-20 TIMES that much! That’s $57.60 to $76.80!

Based on weight, a penny drive that collected $25,000.00 could have collected as much as $500,000.00. And that charity that collected $1.4 Million … could have been on track to $28 Million!

The other difference between a penny drive and a foreign currency program …

Unlike penny drives from 10 years ago, a foreign currency program does not require a lot of effort by the charity. Sure, they need to collect the donations (either directly or through local partnerships), but the “work” of handling those funds does not have to fall to them, at least not alone.

Global Coin Solutions is there to be that partner. We can handle the pickups (either from the charity or their partner network), we handle the processing, sorting, and the ultimate repatriation of the currency that enables us to turn it into funds the charity can use.

Why aren’t more charities collecting leftover foreign currency today?

The big effort for the charity is in promoting their program, creating awareness. Collecting leftover foreign currency is new in Canada so there will be lots of questions; the most common being “why haven’t I heard about this before?”.

The other effort for the charity will be to find partners to collect on their behalf.

Smaller charities supporting community initiatives will most commonly be looking for small businesses with store fronts. These programs will not only be raising funds for the charity and promoting their work, but also creating awareness and driving traffic to the businesses supporting their collection program.

Larger charities will be looking to connect with provincial or national partners. Those will add logistical challenges but nothing that can’t be overcome.

The other main difference between a penny drive and a foreign currency collection program is that collecting leftover foreign currency is intended to be a long term program, not a short term drive. Canadians travel and therefore there is always more foreign currency coming back into the country. Whereas the penny drive concept was intended to pull pennies into the charity before they stopped being used and the amount in circulation declined to a level that wouldn’t support these programs.

Did you know? Total circulation of the Canadian penny was 35,000,000,000 pieces or $350 Million.

This begs the question: why did charities, big and small, launch penny drives across the country in such a big way and yet they have not picked up on the concept of collecting leftover foreign currency when there is an estimated $2-$3 Billion worth of it available in Canada now?

How else can charities collect foreign currency?

Believe it or not, simply let people know where they can mail their leftover foreign currency.

UNICEF USA promotes the mail in option for their Change for Good program and Americans do!

Durham Children’s Aid Foundation is the founding partner of the Currency for Kids program. They have a very good page promoting the program on their website, use social media very effectively to talk about the program, and use Google Ads to promote it on the internet in general. All of these methods talk about the mail in option … and people do! They receive donations in the mail most days of the week, and not just from people in Ontario. They receive donations from across Canada, from the U.S, and most recently they received a donation mailed in from Hong Kong! Yes, Hong Kong … the one roughly 12,500kms from DCAF’s office in Oshawa Ontario.

People are looking for things to do with their leftover foreign currency, so why not give them something great they can do … helping others!

Global Coin Solutions: The Journey To 8 Years

Global Coin Solutions was started in 2015 after the previous company I had been working for was shut down. This left me in a very difficult position: what do I do next, what happens to my employees, and what happens to the charity partners I had?

What happens now?

Me: Do I go try to find another job? I was almost 50 … who wants to hire someone at almost 50? Also, I really enjoyed what I had been doing; helping put money into charities pockets.

My employees: What happens to them? They were going to be out of a job and that didn’t sit very well with me!

My charity partners: They were involved in a very unique method of fundraising. Without someone to help them, there would be over $1 Million of donations that just disappeared.

Time for a change!

The answer: Create a new company that would not only solve all these challenges but also open new opportunities to help even more charities. This would also allow me to create a company built around the values I had instead of someone else’s.

February 10, 2015 was the day Global Coin Solutions came to life!

My vision from the start was simple: I wanted to help as many charities as possible and put people to work. The math on this is straightforward; the more charities we help, the more money gets raised, and the more people it takes to do that work.

My vision has grown over time.

It now includes employing people with Autism. They have an ability most of us don’t have; the ability to handle repetitive tasks … and not just the ability to do that, but the need to work on repetitive things.

Most recently I have had Global Coin Solutions Certified as a Living Wage Employer. This too is important to me because it is the simply the right thing to do … how can your employees focus on their work if they are worried about putting food on the table or paying for housing or other bills?

Sir Richard Branson has many views on business that I believe in, but one of his most important is taking care of your employees; take care of your employees and they will take care of the clients.

The pandemic changed everything.

Prior to the pandemic, Global Coin Solutions was doing very well. We worked with 4 different airlines in North America (and even 1 in Iceland), several airports in Canada, had different charity clients, and employed 10 staff. We were processing close to $3 Million worth of mixed currency weighing over 22,500 kgs per year!

Shortly after the pandemic hit, Global Coin Solutions became a company of 1: me. Having to layoff my staff was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. But airlines in Canada stopped flying, international airlines were not allowed to cross borders, people were told to stay home … needless to say, there wasn’t much foreign currency being collected by anyone, anywhere.

My new job was to keep Global Coin Solutions alive; alive for my employees to come back to; alive for my charity partners to raise funds again; alive for all the charities I hadn’t yet started working with or people I hadn’t yet employed.

Global Coin Solutions is more than just “a business”.

In case it isn’t clear, Global Coin Solutions isn’t just a business for me. It is a way of life; it is a calling. And it isn’t going anywhere! There are too many charities that need help. There are too many people who need jobs. There is too much that needs to be done and with 8 years under our belt, Global Coin Solutions is just getting started!

2023 is shaping up to be a recovery year for Global Coin Solutions and foreign currency fundraising.

Currency for Kids was launched last year with 12 Children’s Aid Foundations across Ontario and it continues to pickup momentum. The program is successful because of the partnerships the Foundations are creating with local businesses. Collection points are needed in the community so that residents can easily drop off their donations. So while the focus of the program is to generate donations and create awareness for the Foundations, it also creates awareness, generates traffic, and builds goodwill for the businesses supporting the program.

We are also working on a new program (soon to be announced) with a national retailer who launched their own Foundation in March of 2020. The synergy between the retail operation, their Foundation, and leftover foreign currency will be obvious.

2023 brings a new website and blog to Global Coin Solutions. 2023 also celebrates our brand-new web site and this new blog. Please stay tuned as there will be much more to come and we’ll be covering all topics as they relate to leftover foreign currency, and not just from the fundraising point of view.
